NASA’s Scalable Traffic Management for Emergency Response Operations (STEReO) partner workshop was held on February 11 -13, 2020 at NASA Ames Research Center at Moffett Field, California
Over the course of three days, researchers, emergency responders, industry, universities, and other government agencies participated in breakout sessions, presentations, and panels to learn more about current-day emergency response efforts and STEReO’s mission to apply NASA technologies to emergency response operations.
Day One: Current-Day Emergency Response
Included an introduction to STEReO and NASA’s UAS traffic management (UTM) in addition to presentations on response procedures for wildfire, hurricane, and earthquake scenarios. This was followed by breakout session focused on current-day barriers to using UAS in disaster response.
Day Two: New Ideas into the Mix
The STEReO team gave three presentations on NASA technologies – technologies that allow automating UAS traffic management in a manned/unmanned airspace, which was then followed by an industry technology panel about initiatives from other organizations. The day ended with a breakout session focused on game-changers that can transform emergency response operations.
Day Three: Moving Forward
Opened with a “speed-dating” style breakout session on strategies for integrating STEReO concepts into emergency response operations. This was followed by FAA presentations on their research efforts and procedures/considerations for flying in today’s restricted airspace.
Attendees were also given more information on partnering with NASA and the STEReO team, as part of a working group or a contributor to a future flight test demonstration, before ending the workshop with a discussion of next steps.
