Paper by members of the Airspace Operations Laboratory (AOL) awarded Best Paper of Track, Session, and Conference at the 39th Digital Avionics Systems Conference
(Oct 8, 2020)
A paper entitled "Human-system interaction issues and proposed solutions to successful maturation of the UTM system" (Wolter, C., Martin, L., & Jobe, K., 2020) has been awarded Best of Track, Session, and Conference at this year’s 39th Digital Avionics Systems Conference (https://2020.dasconline.org/program). This paper, presented during the UAS and Future Concepts track, describes some of the work done by NASA and partnering organizations over the last five years to develop and demonstrate the maturing capabilities of the Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) Traffic Management (UTM) system and its ability to support communications and coordination among small UAS operations. It describes the human-system interaction (HSI) elements explored during this series of demonstrations and discusses possible barriers to implementation as human operators transitionally fulfill roles that will ultimately be tasked to future automation. Included are suggested mitigations and the most frequently noted HSI items, including operator training, data standardization, and information quality.
