The Aviation System Monitoring and Modeling (ASMM) Team Wins a 2005 R&D 100 Award for the development of the "Morning Report".
(Jul 28, 2005)
The Aviation System Monitoring and Modeling (ASMM) Project Team will receive a prestigious R&D 100 Award for the development of the Morning Report of Atypical Flights tool. The awards banquet will be held on October 20, 2005 in Chicago, Illinois. For over 40 years, the R&D 100 Award has been recognized internationally as a mark of excellence that proves a product was one of the most innovative ideas of the year. Letters of recommendation from Alaska Airlines, Delta Airlines, and SAGEM Avionics, Inc. supported the nomination.

The Morning Report searches for the unexpected and reveals the unknowns. The tool automatically analyzes the data recorded by each aircraft in an airline's fleet for all flights during a selected period of time. Then it brings to the safety analyst's attention all of the flights that were deemed atypical in a multivariate statistical analysis with respect to the main body of comparable flight data.

In its operational evaluation using a non-random set of data available from the three air carriers collaborating under NASA Space Act Agreements with NASA Ames, Morning Report "discovered" that high-energy arrivals seemed to be a frequent precursor of unstable approaches. This led to the identification of the need for, and the development of, analysis tools and display of aircraft energy state during arrival and approach.

These tools and a cockpit display concept have been developed in collaboration with the three air carriers included in the NASA Space Act Agreement, and SAGEM Avionics, Inc., and a patent is pending.
