Modeling of Visual Perception of a Perspective Scene in an Active Control Task (2004)
Because image generation systems cannot duplicate the richness of a naturally viewed scene, it is critical that designers determine which visual cues are necessary and sufficient to perform a control task. We have developed a set of modeling techniques that combines aspects of manual control and visual psychophysics. These techniques can be used to determine which visual cues the pilot is using for control. In two application studies, we demonstrate how visual cue usage varies both as a function of control task (e.g., longitudinal control versus pitch control) and vehicle dynamics (e.g., rate-control dynamics versus acceleration-control dynamics). We conclude that both factors must be considered to optimize visual scene simulation.
