Dr. Barbara Burian (CV - PDF)

is a Research Psychologist in the Human Systems Integration Division of NASA Ames Research Center.  She works collaboratively with air carriers and aircraft manufacturers and personnel in the medical community in analyzing the design and content of quick reference handbooks and paper and electronic checklists used for response to critical events, as well as checklists used in daily normal operations. This work focuses on matching the design and content of the checklist tool to the specific work environment and need and accommodating human cognitive limitations, particularly when under stress. She also conducts research related to the use of automated, integrated and dynamic electronic procedures, automation and information management systems, and intelligent agents on the flight deck.

In recognition of her contributions to the advancement of aviation safety she was elected Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society in 2006, and serves as a consultant to the Royal Aeronautical Society Flight Operations Group.

Dr. Burian is a private pilot and has a bachelor’s degree in Education from The Ohio State University and master’s and doctoral degrees in Psychology from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale.
